How often does one have an opportunity to paint a barn all lit up at night? Hardly ever!
While staying and lodging at Strouds Creek Farm, I'd been wanting to paint this barn as a nocturne to really show off her party lights. But after painting en plein air all day, I was too tired to tackle it. On our last day there, my friend Linda and I agreed that we'd get up before sunrise to paint. We already had permission from the owner to turn on all the lights.
I knew I had to paint fast to capture the light and dark sky effect. Because the story is all about the lights, I reversed my process of painting dark to light and put the lightbulbs in first. Than the dark sky. Attempting this painting in the early morning actually worked out better because as the sun rose, I could see my colors - sometimes a challenge when painting in the dark.
